I recently had the opportunity and pleasure of interviewing the very talented and inspiring Sarah Flint. I’m honored to be a part of her ambassador program! Sarah Flint has designed a life she loves. The 30-Year-Old NYC Based Shoe Brand CEO whose beautiful mind keeps powerful women well-dressed.
1. When did you first realize you wanted to pursue a career as a footwear designer?
I’ve loved art and fashion—especially shoes—my entire life. The first pair I ever fell in love with were my patent-leather tap shoes I had when I was a young girl. I still remember how special I felt when I’d wear them around the house. Becoming a footwear designer was always my dream, and I’m so grateful it has become my reality!
2. What is it that attracts you to shoes?
I believe the right pair can instantly change your mood. You stand straighter and project confidence when you’re in shoes that are stylish, comfortable, and express who you are. For me, the act of getting dressed (obviously including great shoes) is the easiest way to put myself in a more positive mindset.
3. How is working in fashion and design different today than from when you started out?
Something that’s certainly different today is the direct-to-consumer business model. It used to be that the major way you’d gain exposure was through third-party retail, but now that’s not the only avenue a brand can take for discovery. Switching to a direct-to-consumer model changed nearly everything about my business, from our pricing to the creative control I had over my designs.
4. What role do you think social media plays in the fashion world today?
It’s become the ultimate discovery tool for new brands, new pieces, new ideas. Whether they’re influencers you follow or just your own circle of friends, those are now the people we turn to for recommendations and inspiration.
5. What was your biggest fear when going out and starting your own line?
I knew that if people tried on my shoes and experienced the comfort-driven features, they would love them. The fear was that, as an unknown designer, I wouldn’t get people to try them on in the first place. Once they wore them, people saw that my shoes were truly as comfortable as I was saying. I was just nervous about getting that first chance and that opportunity to gain their trust.
6. What 3 key styles do you think every woman should have in her wardrobe this Fall from Sarah Flint?”
My three picks would be the Natalie flat, the Perfect Zip Bootie, and the Rosie loafer. They’re casual yet still polished.
